Divekar College of Commerce has been a unique institution since its inception. It was founded in June 1970 by the Kanara Welfare Trust to offer quality commerce education to needy students in and around Karwar, a port city in the forest district of Uttara Kannada. It was the first college in Karwar offering commerce education. It should also be noted that there was only one commerce college in the entire Uttara Kannada district before the establishment of Divekar College of Commerce. The College was established according to the high standards and lofty ideals followed and set by Dr. Dinakar Desai, a great visionary, poet, statesman, fighter for justice for the poor ryots ,a great educationist and founder of the Kanara Welfare Trust that runs it. Dr. Dinakar Desai, the president of Mumbai Branch of Servants of India Society, founded the Kanara Welfare Trust and went on establishing educational institutions (High Schools) in the remote and backward parts of Uttara Kannada district for improving the living standards of people by education and social service. The institutions run by the KWT have made their mark in their respective fields on the educational map of the district. It has been the constant endeavor of the KWT to provide quality education in its institutions. It is committed to provide adequate infrastructural facilities and human resources like qualified teaching and administrative staff, spacious and functional teaching blocks and other amenities. The College was named after Dr. M. R . Divekar, a great philanthropist who donated liberally for the establishment of the college. Divekar College of Commerce is located on the most beautiful campus that is surrounded by the perennial dark green Sahyadri or the Western Ghat forests and the blue water of the Arabian Sea and the Kali River. The sun rising in the Sahyadri and setting in the Arabian Sea creates myriad of colours on and around the campus.

Divekar College of Commerce grew by leaps and bounds since its inception. Beginning with a modest strength of 150 students, the college had the composite strength of more than 700 students for over two decades before it was bifurcated into Pre-University and Degree Colleges in 2oo1-02. The College was run in a private building at the beginning. The foundation stone for an independent college building and campus was laid on five – acre plot in 1971. The KWT built a simple but magnificent building within a year. Since then the college has been achieving all round progress. Prof. G. V. Bhat, the founder principal of the college dedicated his mind and body, heart and soul for the establishment and development of the college. The College could have a deep and far reaching image under his able leadership – both academic and organizational. Prin. G. V. Bhat was assisted ably by Prof. S. N. The vision of a better, enlightened, productive and creative human being, society, nation and the world is unthinkable without meaningful and quality education and especially higher education. Quality higher education is a must for making students the generations of new researched ideas and the members of the knowledge society as visualized by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India. Education for changing the mindset of students for more productivity and creativity, education for changing the total personality of students into fully functioning, contented and altruistic individuals should be our goals. We can understand the role of quality education as a medium of transformation of the individual and the world in the words of Lord Bertrand Russell who wrote: “The world could be transformed if the basis of education is knowledge wielded by love and values for sustainable development. Through education we need to pass on the message to the society that to maintain the quality it requires commitment, acceptance, reverence, and eloquence. It is not the quantity of education but the quality that is important. To maintain quality it requires constant effort, courage, conviction and commitment.” We, at Divekar College of Commerce, have been striving to realize the transformational goal for making students better, productive, creative and happy human beings and there by make our nation and the world a better place to live in. The realization of such an ideal calls for the collective endeavour of teachers, administrators, students, parents and all those directly or indirectly involved in the process of education.
